Three brass neutral links with screw terminals on black insulated mounts, with loose brass screws in front

Published by Onella Export on 11 October 2026

Every distribution board and consumer unit needs a neutral link: a brass bar with a row of screw terminals where the neutral conductors of each circuit are connected. Earth bars work the same way for protective conductors. Because these parts carry current and must clamp many conductors securely, their material, threads and screws matter.

This guide explains the main types of neutral links, the specifications to agree and the checks to run when buying from a brass neutral link supplier.

What a Neutral Link Does
  • Provides a common connection point for neutral conductors.
  • Allows circuits to be connected and disconnected for testing and maintenance.
  • Must carry the expected current without overheating.
  • Must hold conductors firmly under vibration and temperature changes.
Common Types
TypeDescription
Straight neutral linkBrass bar with a single row of tapped holes and screws
Mounted neutral linkBar fixed on insulated supports or a base for direct mounting
Single-screw per wayOne screw clamps each conductor; compact and economical
Double-screw per wayTwo screws per conductor for a more secure connection
Earth barSimilar construction for protective earth conductors

Links are described by the number of "ways", meaning how many conductors they accept, such as 6-way, 8-way or 12-way.

Specifications to Agree
  • Number of ways and the spacing, or pitch, between terminals
  • Bar cross-section and length, which affect current capacity
  • Conductor hole diameter to suit the cable sizes used
  • Screw thread, size and head type
  • Mounting holes or insulated supports
  • Plating: natural brass, tin or nickel
  • Brass grade if your design or standard requires one

The panel or distribution board as a whole must meet the applicable assembly standard in your market, so share your design requirements with the supplier.

Quality Checks Before Approving a Supplier
  1. Check every tapped hole with thread gauges on samples.
  2. Confirm hole diameters and pitch against your drawing.
  3. Tighten screws to your assembly torque and check for thread stripping.
  4. Inspect for burrs that could damage conductor insulation.
  5. Check plating adhesion and finish.
  6. Request material test certificates for the brass.
Supplied as Kits or Loose

Agree whether links are supplied with screws fitted, screws packed separately, or bars only. Fitted screws save assembly time but require careful packing to stop screws loosening in transit. Clear labelling by way count and part number avoids mix-ups on your assembly line.

Planning Volumes

Panel builders often use several way counts. Share your annual forecast by size so the supplier can plan bar stock and machine time, and consider standardising on fewer sizes to reduce costs and stock.

Packing and Delivery
  • Polythene bags with anti-tarnish protection for long transit
  • Cartons labelled with part number, way count and quantity
  • Consistent packing quantities to simplify stock counting

Related Brass Panel Components

Panel builders often source neutral links together with earth terminals, grounding blocks, busbar connectors, terminal connectors, cable glands and stop plugs. Buying them from one manufacturer keeps finishes and quality consistent across the panel. See our overview of brass electrical and electronic components.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a brass neutral link?

It is a brass bar with a row of screw terminals that provides a common connection point for the neutral conductors of each circuit in a distribution board or consumer unit.

What does 8-way neutral link mean?

The way count is the number of conductors the link accepts. An 8-way neutral link has eight terminal positions.

What is the difference between a neutral link and an earth bar?

They are built in a similar way, but a neutral link connects neutral conductors while an earth bar connects protective earth conductors.

What should I specify when ordering neutral links?

Specify the number of ways, pitch, bar cross-section and length, conductor hole size, screw thread and head, mounting method, plating and brass grade if required.

Can neutral links be supplied with screws fitted?

Yes. Links can be supplied with screws fitted, with screws packed separately or as bars only, depending on your assembly process.
